A local agribusiness firm based in Bulawayo, Hamara Group, introduced a new chicken breed called “Hamara Sasso’ that is set to change poultry farming in Zimbabwe.

Speaking to a local publication, the company said the new chicken breed is a harder type of bird akin to the “road runners” or “nkukhu makhaya”as the bird is resistant to diseases and drought and can also be reared both for meat and egg production. The bird is touted as commercially viable as it uses less feed and it can can free-range easily.

The company has already started selling chicks of the new breed as well as live birds locally and believes the new breed will change the face of the poultry industry in Zimbabwe as it has done in Ethiopia where the breed is very popular.
