In a welcome development announced this afternoon by President Emmerson Mnangagwa, lockdown restrictions announced on 2 January 2021 have been reviewed as follows:
- Curfew now from 10pm to 5am.
- Exemption letters no longer required.
- Supermarkets to operate until 7pm.
- Industry allowed to open with strict adherence to World Health Organisation guidelines.
- SMEs, food markets, and the informal sector to reopen.
- Schools, Universities, and Colleges to prepare for reopening and observe WHO protocols. Virtual learning encouraged where possible.
- Intercity travel can now resume, bus operators to ensure regular disinfection of buses.
- Funeral gatherings to remain at 30 people, all other gatherings must not exceed 50 people.
- Restaurants to open for takeaways and deliveries only. No sit-ins allowed.
- Bars, nightclubs, and gyms to remain closed.
- Bottle stores to open for takeaways only.
The President advised a Statutory Instrument will be issued soon to clarify on these measures.
Unfortunately, the issue of opening borders was not mentioned in the announcement.
