An outbreak of the deadly Avian Influenza (bird flu) disease was recently detected at one of Irvine’s site just outside Harare. The situation, according to a recent press statement published in the local media, has been contained following joint efforts by Irvine’s Zimbabwe and the Zimbabwe Veterinary Department in quarantining the isolated site and destroying the affected flock.

A number of messages were already circulating on social media and whatsapp groups regarding the disease outbreak and the press statement helps to set the record straight and reassure the panicky market.

What is avian influenza?

Avian influenza, commonly known as bird flu, is a deadly infectious disease caused by a virus and affects birds such as chickens and can cause high mortality rates to flocks. The disease can also be passed to humans through contact with infected birds.

Precautionary measures:

Poultry farmers are being encouraged to be vigilant and protect their flocks through implementing bio-security measures such as restricting unauthorized access by people or other wild birds to their flocks and proper disinfection of poultry equipment. Any outbreaks should also be reported to the Zimbabwe Veterinary Department as soon as possible.
